US leather retailer sales fall 5.7% in October

08/11/2002

The US leather apparel and accessories retailer Wilsons The Leather Experts Inc. has posted a 5.7% decline in same store sales for October 2002, to $58.7 million.

Of the total, sales at the company's Wilsons Leather (i.e. non travel) stores were down 6.2% on the year before. However, there was some good news in that its travel store sales were down by only 1.3%, versus the 34.0% decline seen in October 2001, in the wake of the US terrorist attacks.

Year-to-date comparable store sales, including travel stores, were down 8.0% to $341.3 million with Wilsons Leather stores showing a decline of 5.5% versus a 7.3% decrease in the same period last year.  The company said it would likely post a fully-diluted loss per share for the quarter of between $0.84 and $0.87.
