Kalahari Kid looks east

07/11/2002

The South African company, Kalahari Kid has announced plans to export goat products worth about R1bn ($101 million) a year to the Middle East by 2007.

The venture is a public-private partnership between investors in South Africa and the Middle East and the Northern Cape government. The geographical advantage of South Africa enables reduced transportation times and costs, and Kalahari plans to establish a network of farms from which goats could be sourced.

The company is relying on the government to make one million hectares of land available to the farmers. Northern Cape, Eastern Cape and North West have been identified as potential farming areas, and a fourth province is expected to come on board. Kalahari is busy acquiring abattoir facilities, and has access to about R60m from shareholders to date.
