US footwear importer goes 100% employee-owned

The owner and founder of Birkenstock Footprint Sandals Inc., the US importer and distributor of the German Birkenstock brand of footwear, has passed on the remaining shares of the business to her employees.

Under an Employee Stock Ownership Plan created by Margot Fraser in 1993, the company’s employees first took a 10% stake in the company, followed by a further 30% in 1997.
