Mongolian ‘meatsheep’ programme bears little fruit
30/10/2002
Meat exporters in Mongolia are sceptical of assertions by the Mongolian Ministry of Finance and Economy that more meat will be shipped from the country this year.
The Government’s early attempts to intensify livestock production have, so far, produced little results. The artificial insemination programme for producing ‘meat sheep’ involved around 200 sheep, resulting in the birth of 100 lambs in spring 2002.
In a statement it defended its efforts by stating that transformation in farming can not be done overnight but requires gradual and step-by-step progress. The Mongolian government hopes that long-term success with artificial insemination will lead to more meat of increased quality being produced.
