Formaldehyde fumes suspected in death of shoe factory worker
The spraying of formaldehyde in a storage area is thought to be behind an outbreak of sickness among employees at a Vietnamese footwear plant, in which a worker died.
Hundreds of workers at the Nam Kang Shoe Factory, located in the Binh Duong province, were sent home early on Friday (October 25) after they complained of a noxious smell. That night around 150 workers visited hospital and the next day a female worker who had been hospitalised with breathing difficulties tragically died.
Throughout Saturday, many workers had even more severe reactions, experiencing headaches, eye irritation and vomiting. The formaldehyde was being used as a leather preservative.
