Footwear sector takes brunt of Indonesian manufacturing slump

29/10/2002

With a tally of 349 organisations, textiles, garment and leather goods producers topped the "inactive" list of manufacturing businesses that closed down, merged or downsized last year, as defined by Indonesia’s Central Bureau of Statistics.

This compares with the second and third largest groups of food, beverage and tobacco (346), and the wood, bamboo, rattan and willow sectors (236).  In all, Indonesia’s beleaguered manufacturing sector shed 100,000 workers during the year, up from the estimated 87,370 the previous year. The report was based on a survey of more than 20,000 manufacturing firms.
