Hathaway Shirts follows in Dexter`s footprints, offshore
Hathaway Shirts, the last major US brand name in shirts, ceased production on October 19 2002 following 165 years of producing the popular brand name in Waterville, Maine. The closure will put 235 workers on the street.
The company’s move to outsource follows the route taken by Arrow and Van Heusen, two strong competitors of Hathaway. It also follows moves made by G.H. Bass and Co., which closed in 1998; Cole Haan, moved in 1999; and Dexter Shoe, owned by Hathaway, which closed last year putting 475 people out of work.
