New footwear prepolymer from Huntsman

18/10/2002
Huntsman Polyurethanes Footwear Division has developed ‘Suptrasec 2982’, a new MDI-based prepolymer for the production of polyurethane footwear components. The system has been designed to improve storage life and liquidity and is aimed at providing footwear manufacturers with a more robust and user-friendly product. Further claimed benefits include better transparency for fashion outsoles and a sharper definition on midsoles.

According to Huntsman, Suprasec 2982 is particularly suited to footwear manufacturers located in areas with climate extremes where storage conditions are not ideal, leading to the premature degradation of the prepolymer. Suprasec 2982 remains liquid, even at low temperatures, and is less susceptible to dimerisation at elevated temperatures. Customer groups already using the technology include safety boot companies on the Indian subcontinent and causal shoemakers in Eastern Europe.

In addition to safety boots, applications for Suprasec 2982 include a range of soft, comfortable outsoles for sports and casual shoes.
