Brazilian leather exports increase

15/10/2002
According to the Brazilian Department of Foreign Trade, SECEX, in the eight first months of 2002 Brazilian leather exports increased by 5% in volume and 3% in value, compared to last year’s figures.

The reason for the increase in value has been given as the drop in price of raw materials that were overvalued in 2001, due to the shortage of hides deriving from the problems caused by the BSE and FMD epidemics.

Italy is still the largest importer of Brazilian leather, taking 48% of exports. Hong Kong and China have increased their share so that it is now almost 20% of all leather exported by Brazilian tanneries.
