The Namibian government’s goal of having all export livestock slaughtered locally will move one step closer in November, when a new abattoir at Witvlei begins hiring and training workers.  At least 150 jobs will be created at the facility, which will be accompanied by a nearby tannery and be capable of slaughtering around 100 cattle per day.

Speaking at a recent public meeting at the US Embassy, Coen Wium, project co-ordinator of the abattoir, that the facility was hoping to export to both the US and EU, subject to US inpections of the Namibian slaughter sector.
