Andean footwear and leather clothing granted duty free access to US

26/09/2002
Footwear, leather clothing, textiles, handbags and luggage are among 700 products from Peru, Colombia and Bolivia that have been accorded duty free status by the extended Andean Trade Preferences Act, approved by President George W. Bush, today. The extension of the same benefits to Ecuador was put on hold, pending a review of concerns raised by a leading human rights group and US companies.

Designed to reward developing countries for tackling the production of narcotics and help stimulate alternatives to cocaine production, the Andean Trade Preferences Act already extended duty free status to 5,600 products. The green light for the concessions was given by congress in August (for previous leatherbiz.com use search facility, news home page).
