Japanese consumer spending on footwear, furniture down in July

Japan’s Public Management, Home Affairs, Posts and Telecommunications Ministry has reported spending on footwear and clothing declined 4.5% during July 2002 compared with July 2001. This compares with a rise of 1.3% in average household spending to 316,444 yen ($2,633), which was the second consecutive monthly rise.

Other falls were noted in furniture and household goods purchases (-10.2%) and food ( –1.5%). Household spending accounts for about 60% of Japan's gross domestic product.
