Out of the fire… Canadian tannery site owner billed for site cleanup
The owners of a former tannery site in Canada have been hit with a $46,570 ($29.500) bill for the cleanup of improperly stored chemicals.
The cleanup operation followed a major fire that destroyed a warehouse at the former S.B. Tanning site at Kitchener, Ontario on July 20. Though the chemicals were not involved in the blaze, firefighters nevertheless considered them a serious enough hazard to impose an ‘immediate threat to life’ order under the Fire Protection and Prevention Act. In addition to the cleanup, the bill included repairs to a defective sprinkler system, which was also not involved in the blaze.
