When it opens this Saturday, the new Tokyo outlet of the Italian leather goods brand Furla will be the latest in a series to be opened by top end luxury brands in the city.

Coach has already opened a large new leather goods store in the Ginza shopping district while last Friday Louis Vuitton opened its 44th store in Japan, a 10-floor store on the prestige retail Omotesando shopping strip. Louis Vuitton is estimated to derive almost a third of its global sales in Japan which rose to $1 billion last year - even with the disruption of a recession and Sept. 11.
