British wool producers look to the future
The British Wool Marketing Board (BWMB) has reported that it has continued to make long-term investments with the aim of adding value to wool clip, despite the frustrations brought about by the foot-and-mouth crisis.
Because of the disease, the UK clip was reduced by 17% from 44 million kilos in 2001 to 36.3 million kilos. During the same period, the number of registered producers fell by over 4,000 to 67,095.
To aid recovery, the board has accelerated its long-term investment programme, advancing a number of projects including the trial of a new electronic auction system incorporating a fully integrated stock control and sales operation.
