According to the China Leather Industry Information Centre, the leading leather-producing centre of China, Xinji City, has launched a new leather garment sales outlet in St. Petersburg, creating a sales chain across Russia.

Apparently over 20 leather enterprises, which started their businesses in 1998, have taken five years to develop their distribution network. It now stretches as far north as St.Petersburg with Moscow acting as the hub.

Xinji garments make up around 80 % of the local sheep skin market. In the first half of 2002, Xinji City exported over 1.2 million leather garments to Russia with a total value of $ 61.82 million, an increase of 27.9% than the same period of last year.

So far around 200 enterprises are exporting leather garments directly to Russia, and 52 of them have signed bilateral agreements with local trading units.
