Huidong shoe festival aims to revive local industry
Huidong County, a key shoe production area in Guangdong province, is to hold the first Huidong ‘Shoe Culture Festival’ during 21 to 24 October 2002.
Huidong has a population of 100 thousand working in shoe-making industry and, in 2001, Huidong produces over 200 million pairs of shoes exporting to countries such as the U.S.A, Russia and South Africa with a total value of $520 million.
Huidong County is one of the largest shoe production centres in China, but in recent years its development has been overwhelmed by the rise of Wenzhou, Jinjiang and Dongguan City. The local government hopes that the festival will revive the development of the shoe industry in the province.
