Brazilian footwear exports drop 12% in first half 2002

23/08/2002

According to information provided by the Brazilian foreign trade agency Secex, national footwear exports dropped 12% in the first half of the year to $ 713 million.

Ricardo Wirth, vice-president of Abicalcados, - Brazilian Association of Footwear Manufacturers – said that in his view the worst of the damage had been inflicted by the strong US dollar. This had made imported components expensive – a factor which in turn had inflated the price of exported finished products.

However, a glimmer of hope was provided by Heitor Klein, director of the ‘Shoes from Brazil’ programme who said he was confident that US importers should soon begin placing orders for the spring-summer 2003.  Despite the current situation, Abicalcados foresees a 10% growth in exports for the whole of 2002, with US exports amounting to $1.8 billion.
