Leather shortages hamper Wenzhou shoemakers
07/08/2002
A shortage of high quality ox leather is frustrating the efforts of shoemakers in the Eastern Chinese city of Wenzhou to break into the lucrative export market, local sources have reported.
The success of famous local brands, such as Aokang, Kangnai and Hongqingting, has encouraged an increasing number of shoe-making enterprises in the city to start their own brands. There are over 200 producers in operation with the Wenzhou region, but the lack of suitable quality local shoe upper leather has so far precluded exports to the US and Europe.
