Nike to cut production in Indonesia
Nike and Reebok have decided to cut production in Indonesia to the consternation of Indonesian workers, it has emerged this week.
Reebok's recent decision to terminate a deal to make shoes at a factory in Bandung has been greeted by angry protests outside the US embassy in Jakarta. On Tuesday, around 1,000 workers, upset at the loss of nearly 5,400 jobs, converged and burned a giant tennis shoe and chanted anti-Reebok slogans.
On Wednesday Nike admitted that it is to terminate a contract with local supplier PT Doson Indonesia in November. Despite this, the company stressed that it would continue to work with 47 factories, employing 123,000 workers.
