Brazil the world centre of chinchilla skin production

30/07/2002
Brazil produces more chinchilla skins than any other country in the world, according to Carlos Luis Perez, president of ACHILA, Brazilian Association of Chinchilla Breeders, with approximately 35,000 pelts produced per year. All production is exported with the main markets being Japan and China, which collectively account for 60% of the total.

The State of Rio Grande do Sul, where ACHILA has its head office, contains the largest concentration of the country’s 450 breeders which together are responsible for 8.5% to - 9% of global production.

President of the Chinchilla Breeders Association of the State of Santa Catarina, Acyr Becker, attributes the industry’s success to the availability of space and abundance of suitable food in Brazil, noting that the average price per skin was $35.00.
