Merrell angles its chips for kids
Entering into a hectic round of late summer shows (seven in all), Merrell (Europe) is bringing three major development initiatives as part of its continuing technology input programme.
M-Chips are midsole inserts in two densities that enable runners to custom tune their shoes in terms of foot alignment. The intention, says Merrell, is to improve gait effectiveness – by which it is assumed that more power is placed into the stride and less is lost to either supination or pronation. M-Chips are matched with the Merrell Air Cushion, which deflects shock and improves stride mechanics.
Second up is Q-Form technology, a compression moulded footframe featuring three degrees of stiffness to offer a greater degree of comfort and support for women runners. Women encounter a number of problems (Merrel calls them ‘challenges’) because of their skeletal structure. A wider pelvis and a lower centre of gravity causes most women to supinate and Merrel says that the Q-Form system directs a woman’s stride into a more fluid and balanced style.
A complete new range of children’s footwear is Merrel’s recognition of – we quote – ‘this rapidly growing market’. Almost a full-on match of the adult ranges is available, including sandals, moccasins, hiking boots, and multi-sport shoes. Colours and styles are all geared to appeal to the younger activist.
