19/07/2002

The proposed industrial zone for tanneries in the Pakistan town of Sialkot received final approval from the regional government yesterday, paving the way for the relocation of the area’s tanneries to the 300 acre area.

Current estimates put the number of tanneries operating in and around Sialkot city at 250, with nine being described as large enterprises, 79 medium and 160 small scale tanneries. All are seen as being major contributors to pollution in areas close to Sambrial, Daska and Sialkot.

It is hoped that with its capacity of 18,100 cubic metres of waste water per day, the new PRs90 million facility will make significant inroads into this long-standing problem, while also enhancing the competitive of the industry through improved product quality. The Punjab government will provide 75 per cent of the capital cost with the remainder coming from the private sector.
