Morocco’s exports of leather goods soared 55% in the last eight months of 2001 to 1,286 tons, the country’s foreign trade ministry has reported.

Morocco operates approximately 270 leather-processing units and two leather training institutes, employing 15,000 persons. Footwear production plays an important role in Morocco’s leather industry as the country produces and exports close to 100 million pairs of shoes annually.

As part of a wider shake-up of the industry, the government is currently working with the Italian Leather Association to set up a technical centre incorporating both a leather-making compound and quality standards facility.
