Pakistan livestock shortage adds to industry woes

The continuing border stand-off with India is compounding the problems faced by the Pakistan leather industry, which has already been hit hard by a slowdown in orders from the US and Europe and the reluctance of foreign buyers to visit the country.

Up until the end of last year, Pakistan tanners were able to take advantage of a steady flow of hides derived from cattle imported from India. With that source of supply now cut, prices are on the rise. An official of Hafiz Tannery, Karachi, for instance, confirmed that there has been a 5% increase in prices of hide & skins over the last six months.

Though Pakistan’s exports of finished leather increased 4% by value in the period July 2001 – May 2002 to $213 million (15,471 thousand square metres), leather garment exports dropped 15% from $334.4 million to $284 million.
