A Chinese footwear factory has confirmed that it has recalled a shipment of sports shoes inscribed with the name of Allah. This is seen as being deeply offensive to Muslims as shoes are considered spiritually unclean in the Islamic religion.

Referring to the episode as a ‘cultural misunderstanding’, a spokesperson for the manufacturer, Aile Group Shulemei Shoe and Plastic Co. Ltd, of Hong Kong, apologised for the company’s actions and said it had learned from its mistake.

However, Saudi Arabia's Ministry of Trade issued a statement late last week saying that the company’s products had been blacklisted in the country.
