The World Bank is to open its Central Asian office in Almaty, Kazakhstan. According to the bank, the regional office will further its programmes of assistance for Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan.

The bank stated that a decentralised office would be more effective in sustaining the development of the region and its population. Dennis de Tray, the World Bank's regional director for Central Asia, said: "This will enable us to be closer to clients, react quicker and use resources more rationally".

The World Bank's plans for Astana, Bishkek, Dushanbe, Ashgabat and Tashkent will now be accountable to the regional office, which will, in turn, provide them with economic support.

The World Bank has committed $3.4billion dollars for the five Central Asian countries, $1.8billion dollars allocated to Kazakhstan.
