US Leather Apparel Association highlights trends for autumn-winter
According to the US Leather Apparel Association, the material is all set to take the fashion world by storm in the second half of 2002. The variety and flexibility of leatherwear is a favourite with designers, editors and consumers alike, the association says.
Warm toned neutral colours, such as caramel, cognac, sienna and chocolate will be strongly favoured, as will black. Saturated dark colours like burgundy will also be in vogue.
Women will prefer tunics, peasant tops, shirt jackets and vests. In the trouser area they will favour flat fronts and jeans, as well as A-line, wrap and jean cut skirts, shirtdresses and wrap dresses. Men will go for blazers, shirt jackets anoraks and motorcycle/aviator looks. Vests will also be in vogue, as will coats and jackets. Stadium coats meanwhile will find favour with men, and slim-walkers with women, trench looks and greatcoats appear to be popular with both sexes.
In the detail, lacing, leather strings rings, studs and grommets will be especially desirable, and for stitching embroidery, smocking, loop and top will become commonplace. Military-style rollers, centre bar buckles and toggles are popular finishes, as are raw edge asymmetrical cuts- the ‘deconstructionist’ look.
With the skins themselves, antiqued, distressed, sueded, glazed and denim finishes will be especially popular. For year round wear and versatility, they are expected to be lightweight and reversible. Tosca and merino- long haired or curly- shears will also be preferred.
