Hopes raised on British beef exports to France

Hopes were raised in the UK yesterday that France might lift its ban on British beef sooner rather than later.

The surprise news came after a private dinner between the British prime minister Tony Blair and the French president Jacques Chirac, during which the French premier revealed he had instructed the French food safety agency to reappraise him of the issue before the end of the month.

UK government officials hope that if the agency does declare British beef safe, then it will open the door to the ban being lifted. However, they warned that as the agency is independent of the government, it could reiterate its concerns.
