Pakistan leather garments exporters call for duty rethink
Mr. Fawad Ijaz Khan, Chairman, Pakistan Leather Garments Manufacturers & Exporters Association (PLGMEA) has sent a list of proposals to the government for inclusion in the upcoming budget and the country’s trade policy for 2002-03.
Key recommendations are the imposition of a 20% duty on the export of semi-finished & finished leather, the rationalisation of duty drawback rates for leather garments and the restoration of imports of accessories for garments destined for export markets.
Other proposals include:
- The abolition of income tax charged at 0.75% on the export of leather garments
- The immediate removal of the Export Development Surcharge (EDS)
- Reduced refinance rates on the export of leather garments
- The abolition on import duties on plant and machinery used in the manufacture of leather and leather garments
- The exemption of raw hides, skins, semi-finished & finished leather from sales tax
