Survey emphasises importance of livestock to Pakistan rural economy

14/06/2002

A survey by the Pakistan Ministry of Finance released earlier this week shows livestock accounted for 37.5% of all agricultural business in the financial year 2001/02, equating to 9.4% of the country’s GDP. Livestock also contributed PRs.53.0 billion ($933 million) to net export earnings, representing 12.34% of the total.

Some idea of its importance to the Pakistan rural economy is provided by the fact that 30-35 million people in the countryside are involved in the raising of livestock, with each household having of average 2.5 cattle/buffalo and 5.5 sheep/goat. The survey estimated that livestock provides 30-40% of each rural household’s income.
