Chinese-financed tannery opens in Namibia

30/05/2002

The Northern Tannery in Namibia was officially opened earlier in May after three years of construction. The tannery was designed and built with money and expertise from China. Situated in Ondangwa, a small city in northern Namibia, the tannery represents the first foreign-aid project on a low-interest loan achieved through the Shanghai Foreign Economic Cooperation (SFEC).

The president of Namibia took part in the inauguration and expressed many thanks to the SFEC, which undertook the overall design, equipment purchasing, instalment, technical training and treatment of polluted water. The representative from the SFEC thanked various companies in Shanghai that had been involved, and added that more projects related to leather would be established in the future.

The overall investment to construct the tannery was 50 million yuan ($6.05 million). The facility covers 50,000 square meters and has an annual capacity of 60,000 pieces of finished hide.
