Russia: GDP up 3.7% in first four months
A report published by the Russian ministry for the economy showed that the country’s gross domestic product (GDP) grew by 3.7% over the first four months of 2002, compared with the same period in 2001. In the month of April, GDP growth was 4.5% compared with April 2001. The report was a survey of the country’s social and economic development for the period January-April 2002.
In March, Russia’s GDP grew by 4% compared with March 2001. According to the State Statistics Committee, manufacturing output reached RUR 541 billion ($17 billion) in Russia in April 2002, which is 4.3% more than in April 2001. The country’s manufacturing output reached RUR 2,074 billion ($65.22 billion) in January-April 2002 - 3% more than in the same period a year earlier. Average daily production, seasonally adjusted, rose by 0.2% in April compared to March 2002.
According to the government, overall foreign trade reached $48.3 billion in Russia in the first four months of this year, which 3.2% less than in the corresponding period a year earlier. The country’s trade surplus amounted to $13.7 billion.
Russia’s exports reached $31 billion in January-April 2002 a fall of 9.5% compared with the same period a year earlier. This was broken down into the CIS (Commonwealth of Independent States), where exports were up 2% to $5 billion, and all other countries, where exports were down 11.3% to $26 billion. Imports reached $17.3 billion in January-April 2002, which is 10.4% more than in the corresponding period a year earlier, including $3.8 billion from the CIS countries (down 12.4%), and $13.5 billion in imports from all other foreign countries (up 19.2%).
