At least 50 workers have been killed and many others injured in a major fire that broke out in a footwear factory in Agra in India on Friday, 24 May.

According to police reports about 200 people were in the factory when the fire broke out around 10.45 am. Around 15 fire engines arrived at the scene to try and control the flames. It is thought the fire broke out inside a storeroom used to stock drums containing inflammable adhesive solution.

All the major markets in the city were closed following the incident, which is said to be one of Agra’s worst industrial accidents in many years.
