The 26th Fimec show (the International Machinery and Components Fair for the Leather and Footwear Industry) was the biggest ever held. The event was held at Fenac's exhibition complex in Novo Hamburgo/Rs, Brazil from April 20-23, 2002.

As predicted by Fenac SA (the organisers), the number of exhibitors rose from 800 in the previous edition to 1,026 this time - an increase of approximately 30% over last year's figure.

Exhibitors from 22 countries showcased their technological developments at this exciting edition of Fimec. Of the foreign exhibitors, Italy and Germany had the largest number of participants at the fair. Not even the economic crisis kept Argentinean companies from taking their full part in the event. The number of exhibitors from Argentina rose by 40% compared to last year's event.

The fair had 50,400 visitors with 4,324 professionals from the tanning industry (8.56% of the total), 11,644 from the shoe and accessories sectors (23.06%), 7,869 from the components sector (15.59%), 6,486 represented the machinery industry (12,85%) and 5,374 or 10.64% from the chemical product industry.

A number of other events were held in parallel to the show including fashion shows and technical seminars. The Leather Forum was organised by ABQTIC (the Brazilian Association of Leather Chemists and Technicians), together with the presentation of colours for next season. The Fashion Trend Salon and the Leather Fashion Guide were launched by ABECA. The Fashion Forum and the Buyers' Project were organised by Assintecal, CICB and Abrameq, and Abicalcados launched the ABNT Footwear Comfort Seal.

At a ceremony also taking place, the Export Performance Trophies were awarded to 30 of the main machinery, leather and component exporters. The International Qualification Award was also presented to 45 Brazilian companies in the leather, shoe and allied trades who received their ISO 9000 and/or 14000 certifications up to 2001.

The 27th edition of Fimec will be held from April 24-27, 2003 at Fenac's exhibition grounds, in Novo Hamburgo/Rs, Brazil.
