UK: Textile and tanning industries prepare for environmental legislation
A seminar was held in Leeds at the beginning of May by the government’s Environment Agency to help the textile and tanning industries prepare for the new environmental legislation that is coming into force. New Integrated Pollution Prevention and Control (IPPC) permits will have to be applied for and the July 31, 2002 deadline is approaching.
The UK legislation emanates from the European Union Directive on IPPC, which is designed to prevent, reduce and eliminate pollution at source through more efficient usage of natural resources. The aim is to help industrial operators move towards greater environmental sustainability. Those required to apply for a permit are textile companies with a treatment capacity of more than 10 tonnes a day, and tanneries with a finished product capacity of more than 12 tonnes a day.
