Thailand and Australia expected to move towards free-trade agreement
A meeting between Thailand and Australia’s trade ministers is thought to have paved the way for progress on talks over trade liberalisation in readiness for the visit of Thailand’s prime minister, Thaksin Shinawatra, scheduled to visit Canberra later in May.
Thailand’s trade minister, Dr Adisai, met with his opposite number, Mark Vaile, to prepare the signing of an agreement designed as a step towards a Free Trade Area (FTA). Studies carried out by both sides calculate that the benefit of an FTA could be almost $32 billion in combined growth in gross domestic product over 20 years - $25.2 billion for Thailand and the rest for Australia.
