First BSE case in Poland caused by animal feed

21/05/2002

The first Polish cow infected with BSE had eaten contaminated fodder according to the chief veterinarian of the Malopolska district, Krzysztof Ankiewicz (see Leatherbiz.com, May 13, 2002: "First confirmed case of BSE in Poland").

The entire herd where the infected cow was found has been destroyed, including the cow's mother, but no further traces of BSE have been found. A full-scale investigation is currently underway to try and trace the source of the contaminated fodder.

Meanwhile in the wake of the confirmed case of BSE domestic consumption of beef has fallen considerably in Poland, but a larger blow was dealt by bans imposed by neighbouring importing countries, especially Russia - a major consumer of Polish beef.
