Brazilian tanneries to be included in waste probe

17/05/2002

Tanneries in Brazil’s Parana state are to come under the spotlight in a new study by the state’s environment authority, Sema.

Due for completion at the end of the year, the study will be aimed at identifying the main sources of industrial waste, with a view to ensuring that it is reprocessed where possible, or disposed of properly if it is non-recoverable. Other industries that will fall within the remit of the study include paper/pulp, metallurgy and petrochemicals.

According to Sema, the majority of the more than 840,000 companies in Brazil do not disclose the type or amount of waste they generate or how the waste is disposed of. This is in spite of an industrial waste resolution that dates back to 1988.
