The Pakistan Tanners Association (PTA) has announced that the 23rd Pakistan Leather Show will be held at the Karachi Expo Centre from January 24-26, 2003. Masood Ahmed Shaikh, chairman of the PTA, said he hoped all sectors of the leather industry, including footwear, chemicals, machinery, accessories and service providers would attend the show, which is organised in collaboration with the Pakistan government’s Export Promotion Bureau.

The 22nd Pakistan Leather Show, organised jointly by Pakistan Leather Garments Manufacturers and Exporters Association (PLGMEA) and the PTA, was described as a success, especially for raising awareness of the various aspects of the leather industry. Inaugurated by the commerce minister, Abdul Razak Dawood, on April 19, the event drew large crowds on its first two days.

The show featured a fashion show and a seminar on the latest pattern making and cutting machinery organised by Al Murtaza Machinery. Farrukh Sheikh, chairman of the event’s organising committee, said that the show attracted about 5,000 visitors compared with only 600 of last year, where the show focused on fine quality leather wallets, belts and ladies bags.

According to Fawad Ijaz Khan, Chairman of the PLGMEA, the leather show was a complete success in every respect. He pointed out that for the first time 23 companies (out of the total of 90) came from Sialkot, a major centre of leather garments and products. Their participation is likely to increase to 50% of the expected total of 150 exhibitors booked for next year’s show, he added.
