Pakistan government urged to update export regulations

06/05/2002

Farrukh Sheikh, former chairman of the Pakistan Tanners Association (PTA) and a member of the Federal Export Board (FEB) and Commerce Advisory Group, has tabled a set of proposals to streamline exports in time for the government’s 2002-2003 trade policy. Measures within the proposals include allowing exporters to dispatch free samples – currently restricted – and the re-export of temporarily imported goods, supplied by the buyer free of cost, without sight of a letter of credit or advance payment.

The former PTA chairman said that current customs rules obstructed marketing techniques used by exporters to make quick shipments of export consignments. He added that exporters should be able to carry accessories, such as special trims and labels in commercial quantity as accompanied baggage, when travelling abroad. Current legislation requires such items to be detained at airports to carry out standard import procedures and paper work - defeating the purpose of bringing them in the first place.
