Haining government urges leather companies to switch production
The municipal government of Haining city, China is encouraging leather garment manufacturers to consider changing their production to leather upholstery for furniture in order to reverse falling exports. The last two years has seen a decline in exports of leather garments from Haining city, especially to Eastern Europe.
In contrast to the fate of garment manufacturers, Zhejiang Cason Industrial Co Ltd., the largest exporter of furniture leathers, exported $24.07 million in the first three months of 2002 - an increase of 55.69% over the same period of last year. Total exports of leather sofas from Haining in the quarter rose to $100 million.
