Kenyan leather sector demands protective government measures

24/04/2002

Representatives from the leather industry in Kenya have asked the government to place a 10% duty on the export of hides and skins to protect the local leather industry. Demands also included proposals for grant incentives of 20% on certain exports such as finished leather and shoe uppers.

The government has already singled out the leather sector as one that could benefit from the US African Growth and Opportunity Act (Agoa). However, the leather industry has shrunk since the economy was liberalised with an estimated 2,300 jobs lost in tanning, and many more in associated industries.
