Bangladesh falls short of export targets
Figures released by Bangladesh's Export Promotion Bureau (EPB) for the period July 2001- February 2002, show that exports failed to meet government targets and were lower than the same period a year before. Export earnings were around $750 million or 15.7% lower than the $4.78 billion target set for the period July-February 2002. Total exports were down 7.29% when compared with the corresponding period during the previous fiscal year.
Output was down in all major sectors including leather, garments, knitwear, frozen foods, chemical products, raw jute, tea and handicrafts. Leather exports amounted to $137.94 million for the period - 28.16% lower the $192 million target set for the period, and 11.35% less than exports last year.
