New Bayer agent for Shanghai
Proof that competition in the specialty chemicals sector in China is increasing can be seen in the recent move by German chemicals giant Bayer to create a general northern China agency in Shanghai City. Bayer is under pressure in the region from other European producers such as BASF, Stahl and Fenice, all of whom had impressive stands at this year’s Asia Pacific Leather Fair, held in Hong Kong, April 8-12, 2002.
Statistics from the Chinese Leather Industry Association suggest that foreign leather chemicals companies dominate the Chinese market with around 70% of sales. Domestic leather chemicals firms are being squeezed out as the foreign firms fight for market share amongst themselves.
