Pakistan posts sharp drop in exports of leather goods

09/04/2002
The Pakistan Federal Bureau of Statistics reported today that exports of finished and semi-finished leather, leather products and footwear collectively fell 4% year-on-year during July - March 2002, to $489.5 million

The loss was entirely due to the sharp (11.52%) drop seen in the export of manufactured leather items (garments, gloves and other leather goods) to $286.512 million. This more than outweighed increases in the export of footwear (up 18.3% to $30.8 million) and finished and semi-finished leather (up 7% to $166.6 million).

Some idea of the scale of the problems currently afflicting the Pakistan leather and garment sector is provided by the fact that only $15 million worth of manufactured leather items were exported during February 2002 - 45% fewer in dollar value terms than in February 2001.
