Museum of Leathercraft seeks new home

03/04/2002

The Museum of Leathercraft, currently based in Northampton, UK, is looking for a new home following a decision by the local Council to terminate an agreement to support the institution.

Northampton Borough Council took the drastic measure following a "best value" review of all its services, forcing the museum to contemplate relocation in order to survive, despite the fact that more than 27 years were left to run on the agreement.

Neil MacGregor, Collections Liaison Officer at the Museum, said that in his view the council’s attitude had been extremely hard-nosed, adding "they made it clear the museum was not wanted". This was in spite of Northampton’s historical significance as a centre of footwear and leather production. But he added that the whole museum sector was facing similar problems: "I don’t think many museums will survive in their traditional state," he said.

The collection at the Museum of Leathercraft was founded over 50 years ago by John Waterer and Claude Spiers and is one of only three around the world dedicated to leather. The museum consists of over 5,000 exhibitors along with a library and documentary resources and is administered by voluntary directors and Council officials.
