Testing delay for US farmers

27/03/2002

Two flocks of sheep seized a year ago by the US government are still being tested for a version of the mad cow disease, according to the farmers. The sheep were seized on two separate Vermont farms on March 21 and March 23, 2001. Of the 368 sheep seized, 125 came from the farm owned by Linda and Larry Faillace of Warren, and 243 from Houghton Freeman’s farm in Greensboro.

Since the seizure of the flocks, tissue from the sheep have been in petri dishes in a laboratory in New York. The US department of agriculture said that tests were to have been completed by Memorial Day (May 28), 2001. Meanwhile, the two farmers have yet to be compensated for the seized flocks.
