Skin prices higher in February

27/03/2002

Skin prices rose for the second consecutive month in February according to a report from ANZ. The ANZ World Commodity Price Index increased 0.8% during February 2002, but remained 4.7% lower than in February 2001. Prices were generally steady, with increases in wool and skins providing the main impetus for the rise in the index.

A 7% increase in skin prices in February followed a 3.7% improvement in January. However, the two-month trend comes after a significant fall in price levels since they reached a peak in August 2001. Prices almost halved in the four months to December 2001, following a two-year build-up in stocks world-wide and the world price index remains 42% below its August 2001 peak.
