Farukh Shaikh, the former Chairman of the Pakistan Tanners Association (PTA) has asked his government to take a series of measures to save the leather sector, which has experienced a decline in exports since the terrorist attacks of September 11. Mr Farukh was speaking at the Export Development Board meeting led by Pakistan’s president, General Pervez Musharraf on Thursday, 21 March, 2002.

He said that the government should speed up the creation of a Leather Development Board (LDB) to improve the country’s leather sector, adding that that funding for the LDB could be sourced from the Export Promotion Bureau.

Other measures outlined included improvement of the livestock sector and thereby an increase in the quality of raw hides and skins. Mr Farukh suggested the formation of a committee to oversee the development of the leather sector on a monthly basis.

Pakistan’s total exports in the first eight months of the current financial year stood at $5.809 billion against $5.899 billion during the same period last year, a decrease of 2.99%.
